What have other unions won?

$13k housing stipends, 16% multi-year raises, $30k fertility benefits, $2M patient care funds… the list goes on!

Union = better contract.

Take the example of UCLA. From 2019–2023 they won:

  • Continual raises from 4% up to 6% in 2022-2023.

  • New $12k annual stipend, bonuses and retroactive pay.

  • $30k in fertility benefits. No coinsurance, no deductible.

  • Increases in paid parental leave, sick leave, and meal services.

Instead of another wellness module, how about…

Salary. Family leave. Patient care funds. Work hour reform. Equipment. Housing. Meals. Childcare.

If you can name it, housestaff unions have won it.

The raise was an early victory. But there’s more.

Just by saying “union,” MGB found $40M for housestaff.

But a one-time raise only makes up for two years of inflation. Our challenge will be to maintain equitable salaries every year.

It’s clear now what incentives MGB responds to. If they listen only if we speak in a united, organized voice… let’s help them hear us.

Our union was officially recognized by the NLRB after the conclusion of a secret ballot election.

Do you have questions about unions?

Of course you do! This is probably your first union, unless you were lucky to have a union during a prior residency, fellowship, or job!
